Wine and Dine: Bulk Bin Extravaganza

These days the Bulk Bins at Henry's and Whole Foods are my best friends. I've been trying to "eat clean" for the past couple of months and this is the perfect way to make sure nobody adds any extra nonsense to my food... oh yeah, and there's also the fact that it's dirt cheap, which is my favorite price next to free! Here are some tips if you're interested in getting in on this cheap/clean eating business:

This recipe from Pinch My Salt really is the way to get perfect brown rice! Mine always ends up way too crunchy but now I follow these directions and it's perfection every time!

For dried beans (I've been using the black and pinto version) I prefer to use a slow cooker and here's how I've been doing this:

  • Rinse/drain the beans and put them in the slow cooker
  • Cover them with water about an inch and a half above the beans
  • Set the cooker to high heat for 8 hours and watch 8 episodes of Law and Order and they're done!
  • In the 7th hour, add some diced onion, garlic and seasoning... I usually use sea salt, a ton of chili powder and some cumin. Sometimes I'll add some tomato too.
  • If you prefer them to have more of a refried texture, set them on low for another few hours
I like to make little bowls with brown rice, black beans, avocado, tomato, cilantro and diced onion. Sometimes I get crazy and add an Ezekiel tortilla into the mix. Yummers!
