Iconic skateboard photographer, Grant Brittain, is teaming up with Josh Higgins for an art show at the Subtext Gallery, which starts this Friday with a reception featuring the artists themselves. Here's a blurb from the Subtext website:
Different artists, different mediums, different content. But the song remains the same (or at least similar). Friends and fellow artists Grant Brittain and Josh Higgins will grace the walls of Subtext in a joint venture of unrelated themes. Brittain’s portraiture of some of skateboarding’s greatest names through the years features icons and underground heroes. Higgins’ poster-art focuses on his work with punkers, musical heros, and charitable causes. Together, the collective work suggests what it would be like to eavesdrop on these guys hanging out, having a beer, and comparing broken wrists and paper cuts. LOOK: A dialogue for your eyes. At Subtext this summer.
I really want to go to this but we have friends in town for a wedding this weekend so we'll see how that plays out. I am such a big fan of skate photography... makes me long for the good 'ol days, working at TWS, eating trail mix with Krissy in her skate photo den and dishing the dirt with Haydes in her treehouse! Slightly tangential but Grant Brittain was the founding photographer at TWS and the reception area was graced with oversize photos, most of which were Brittain's. Does that link work for you? It's from the Facebook of founder, Larry Balma's wife, Louise, my absolute hero! Anyway, all this is to say that I have a serious soft spot in my heart for this and would love to make it over to Little Italy to catch the show. If not Friday, maybe later this summer! Come with?!
