I mentioned I was reading the book
Just Kids by Patti Smith. After three dedicated sittings (two plane rides and one very long bath) I have finished. I finished on the plane last night and as we descended into San Diego, fell into a heaving pile of tears on Dusty's lap. Not just because the story has a sad ending -- you really know that's coming. It is just so moving to read a love story that is not just about the love between two people, but between two people and their art. Patti and Robert took turns providing for each other, supporting each other to ensure the other could succeed and knew in their hearts they would both have the chance to give the world the gift of their art. To read the stories of Patti Smith and witness firsthand as she goes from sleeping in doorways and in Central Park to living at the Chelsea Hotel, rubbing shoulders at Max's Kansas City with everyone from Allen Ginsberg to Janis Joplin to then being a part of the CBGB punk rock movement, all the while maintaining a deep, co-supportive relationship with Robert is truly, utterly moving. If we're being honest, I still can't stop crying. Please read this book.
