In 1971, George Harrison staged two Madison Square Garden concerts, starring an amazing group of musicians, including Ravi Shankar, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr and Leon Russell, all benefitting the people of Bangladesh.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Concert For Bangladesh, UNICEF is launching a 'Month of Giving' donation campaign in August for the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF, helping to provide emergency relief for children in famine and drought-stricken regions in the Horn of Africa. All you need to do to help is buy the The Concert for Bangladesh album on iTunes. You should own it regardless of the benefit for it's pure amazingness so it's a win-win.
When Harrison was asked in 1971 why he he put together The Concert for Bangladesh, he simply replied, "Because I was asked by a friend [Ravi Shankar] if I would help, that's all." And that's one of the reasons he's my favorite Beatle. That and he's the cutest:
I love this casual, quiet rehearsal footage of George and Bob Dylan, working on If Not For Youand stumbling/giggling along the way:
The entire entire concert can be streamed free on iTunes all weekend. Keep an eye out for one of the greatest performances of ALL TIME, spotlighting the insanely amazingly unreal (can you tell I am obsessed? I mean the guy is ELTON JOHN's inspiration... what do you want?!) Leon Russell:
