PATTI SMITH // SPRECKELS

Saturday night at Spreckels Theater, I got the amazing gift of a lifetime -- seeing Patti Smith in the flesh as she read aloud from her book, Just Kids, and performed a handful of songs.  After the show, she answered some pretty lame questions from the audience ever-so-eloquently and then she autographed books in the lobby.  I got a signed copy of Just Kids from her (forgot my original copy but Dusty swooped in like a hero as per usual) and I mumbled some lame words to her that she couldn't hear.  It's hard to put into words how special the evening was for me.  I admire Patti for her beauty as a person, an artist and a musician and for ability to be an honest, authentic individual.  I've been lucky enough to see some of my favorite punk acts in my lifetime -- from Bowie, Elvis Costello and The NY Dolls (just Sylvain & Johansen) to Black Flag, Bad Brains and MC5.  This show was better than all of those combined.  Possibly multiplied by 10.

Also, if you remember my last post about  Just Kids, you might wonder if I shed a tear or two at this show.  Sobbed my eyes out.  The whole time.  Like a baby.  There's just something about Patti.  If you haven't read the book yet,  read it.  Dare you try not to cry.
